to put on a house?
We are trying to become more eco-friendly and live in the south.
So its ok-ly sunny.
How much do they usually run?
Solar Panel prices vary from home to home. There's many factors in determining how much a system would cost. It largely depends on how big your home is and how much power you use. Check out this solar panel company. I think they would be able to help you out. http://www.maketheswitchtosolar.com

It depends, partially on how much energy you want to produce, how many hours of sunlight and direction they will face. You can get a system that will reduce you bill for less money. There are also local and state rebates available in many areas and a 30% federal tax credit to help with the cost.
I can tell you my system cost $26K, but I only paid $16K because of a $10K state rebate and I will only get a $2K tax credit, because that was the max for residential last year. My system is a 3.74 kwdc roof mounted system. It produces about 75% of my energy in the summer and about 50% in the winter. I expect to break even in the 7th year, it is saving me about $2K per year on my energy bill and our rates go up an average of 5% each year. Over the lifetime of the system I will have saved over $50K.
I always encourage people to contact a local licensed contractor to give you a free estimate to see what they recommend, then decide what you can afford. I live in a city that buys back my unused energy so during the day my meter runs backwards. Off the grid systems need to be much larger so it can produce enough energy in the winter months to not only power the house but to have enough to store for the night and the days when the sun doesn't come out.

A professionally built solar panels usually cost thousands of dollars.
So I recommend you to build your own solar cell; it will cost you a few hundred dollars and the effectiveness of homemade solar panels are similar to the professional ones.
Check out my site on homemade solar panels:

It will take you about 15 years to pay for it as compared to buying the local electricity. Some states tax the utilities. If you create your own electricity they still want the tax. It doesn't pay unless you live in a cabin where electricity isnt available.
