For the Honda Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Video contest, we explain how to do low-cost home repair in event of a man-made or natural disaster like an earthquake or a Hurricane Katrina to have RENEWABLE, off-the-grid, electrical power from the sun and human energy to provide light, TV, radio communications, DVD and computing power–even creature comforts like cold drinks!
One oth the items we showcase is the Nebo Tools http://www.nebotools.com wind-up flashlight model #5027

If you look at America’s energy usage, 50% of it is our cars/trucks and 25% our industries and the last 25% is used to power our homes. In the month of September 2008, Americans citizens decided to tell the oil companies to go F-off and drove 15 BILLION less miles and this drove down the gas prices from $4 a gallon to just $2….hmmmm methinks if we would stop being consumer doormats we could actually force the greedy corporations to do the right things….If we build upon this emergency solar/human power package as a start, we can eliminate 1/4 of our nation’s entire energy use by EVERY HOME being completely powered off the grid; its just a matter of getting more panels coupled with 12V and low-wattage 110V AC devices tackling difficult tasks like air conditioning and running microwave ovens for food preparation. Heating water should be done by direct sun heating and/or natural gas.

Im not sure if …
Im not sure if cellphone towers have back up generators, or how long they would have gas. So a good idea is those new walkie-talkies (called FSR or something Family Service Radio) with solar/rechargeable batteries. Maby even start a local network that can extend the range for fire and ambulance too.

Good video very entertaining. But if power goes out im not sure if cellphone towers have back up generators… if you want to still talk to your mom or friends get some of those new walkie talkies (FSR – Family Service
Radio..or similar) with rechargeable batteries. They can even be used to assist things like amubulance and fire trucks where to go. Maby even start a local network to relay messages to farther distances. Even without brownouts, they are cool to have.
